BOTSWANA HORSEBACK SAFARIS:

AFRICAN HORSEBACK SAFARIS

Within the Okavango Delta lies the Macatoo Camp, where after a 2 hour flight from Johannesburg and a greeted welcome by the traditional song of the Macatoo Mamas, you will find yourself in a paradise where from a private veranda view you might spot baboons, hyenas, and elephants residing within the seasonal floodplain.

Activities range from horseback safaris to game drives, bird walks, night drives, seasonal boating, canoeing, and fishing. The riding varies from quietly stalking big game and admiring the bird life, to cantering through the water meadows alongside galloping giraffe and lechwe. While the horses rest at nighttime, the 4x4s are used for spotting the nocturnal species revealing some unbelievable photo opportunities.

On the longer safaris guests have the opportunity to experience the thrill of riding out to a mobile fly-camp that is ready for your arrival at the end of a hard day in the saddle.

EXAMPLE ITINERARY

Day 1/2. After a short flight from Maun the safari heads out of camp and rides westwards through seas of backcountry grass, following elephant trails from one palm island to another.

Day 3. Leave camp early to investigate fresh game tracks, joining the rare semi-aquatic antelope, the red lechwe, as they thunder through the water meadows. A reward for the early start includes a champagne breakfast that awaits you, under a large baobab tree. The evening changes into more of a stalking mode, as the opportunity to see elephants playing in the lower flood plains is present.

Day 4. Provides a stunning change in the terrain as the horses make their way through clouds of bushman hair grass, to reveal endless plains dotted with fig trees. The opportunity to roam with the giraffe or shyer antelope is very common here and as the pace increases out onto the floodplains. It is hard not to disturb the troops of baboons that are playing in the woodlands.

Day5/6. The exploration of the delta increases as you start to splash through the water of the vast open plains, home to the wildebeest and zebra. The riding then hits full pace as you approach the deep reedy areas that are abundant with bird life.

Day 7/8. Your last full day's riding in this magical place takes you cantering through the shallow flood plains, admiring the deeper pools of lilies. Here, the buffalo gather in numbers and you have to creep up to them using islands for cover.
