This original gift created New Zealand's first National Park which now covers an area of more than 80,000 hectares and has a World Heritage classification. The Tongariro Trek has you returning to the comfort and splendid elegance of the Grand Chateau each evening. The Grand Chateau, opened in 1929 and is known as the Grand Old Lady of the Mountain due to its classic elegance. The Tongariro Trek takes you onto the volcanic plateau to experience amazing views plus flora and fauna unusual for New Zealand. On Day 3 you embark on the Tongariro Crossing which is often called the finest one day walk in New Zealand.
In recent times, international headlines have focused on Mount Ruapehu as the mountain has displayed recent signs of renewed volcanic activity. Lake Alabaster and beside alpine rivers in an untouched landscape. |
