Dominica

Overview:

In the native language, Dominica is called, Waitukubuli, meaning, “tall is her body,” and this Caribbean paradise in the Lesser Antilles lives up to the name with high jungle peaks connected by 114-miles of hiking trails and deep waters that house resident sperm whales and large schools of fish life. This adventure itinerary showcases the marine reserve of the southern end, the beaches and jungles of the north, connected by inland hikes to boiling lakes, through hidden waterfalls, and with friendly local guides who will share their Caribbean flavor for life.

Itinerary:

Soufriere – 4 Nights

At the southern tip of Dominica, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean is the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve. While cruise ship passengers will only be famous places, such as Champagne Beach, you’ll have ideal access to snorkeling and scuba diving in the protected marine reserve. Afterwards, enjoy local hangouts with reggae tunes at the rum bar or a Caribbean meal at Mr. Bubbles Bar followed by a dip in the hot water of a volcanic spring as it mixes in the sea. Awaken to a chorus of birdsong from your hillside resort where daily yoga, spa, and freshly prepared meals compliment your adventures. The incredible diversity of hiking trails means this can be customized for different ability levels. Set out early in the morning with a packed lunch and make your way into the highland interior for a day of hiking, whether that is to a scenic overlook and cascading waterfall, or the strenuous full day hike up to the famous Boling Lake through the Valley of Desolation.

Portsmouth – 4 Nights

Make your way to the north via private whale watching boat excursion with a picnic on the boat and drop off in Portsmouth for your stay in a beachfront boutique hotel. Here, you’ll have access to the Northern Forest Reserve and the Cabrits National Park peninsula. Explore forests favored by the endemic Sisserou parrot with local birding guides, set out on full day hiking expeditions, and rappel down waterfalls on a day of canyoning. Additional boat-based whale watching excursions, water sports, and exploring town can all be included as well.
